"On Your Tod"
It was Tod Sloan who popularized the forward seat style of riding, or the "monkey crouch" as the British called it, when he began riding there in 1897. Initially laughed at, his style revolutionized the sport worldwide. The name of Tod Sloan, a left a mark on the English language. His fame spread to London where the name was adopted into the rhyming slang to mean 'own' as in 'on his own'. Hence, someone 'on his tod' is alone. This adoption of a rhyming phrase then the dropping of the word which rhymes is normal.
David Tod David Tod - I'm his indirect namesake. David Tod was governor of Ohio during the Civil War. He was responsible for recruiting Ohioans as soldiers for the cause. Abraham Lincoln said, "He is my friend, with a big head full of brains... he made a good governor, and has made a fortune for himself." Today you can find lots of things named Tod throughout Northeastern Ohio, including Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown and Tod Ave. in Warren.
Tod Engine The Tod Steam Engine is a 4,000 horsepower steam engine made by the William Tod Company of Youngstown. It operated from February 11, 1914 until sometime in 1979. It weights 260 tons and measures over 46 ft. in length. The engine would have been scrapped if not for the efforts of the Tod Engine Foundation in 1995. The foundation constructed the Tod Engine Heritage Park in Youngstown where the engine is now on display. William Tod was the son of Governor David Tod (see above.)
